Rangers Shoes: Maintenance

A good pair of boots is an investment, so it is in your best interest to apply these few maintenance tips to keep your investment profitable.
  • DAILY MAINTENANCE
The most important thing to keep your intervention shoes in good condition is to perform daily maintenance. Yes... although cleaning your shoes after each use may seem boring or monotonous, remember that your finances will fully thank you for taking the time to do it. After each use in the field, dust and debris often get embedded in the leather or the material of the shoe, which will damage it and reduce its "lifespan." The first rule to apply is simply to wipe your shoes with a cloth. This small habit will have a significant impact on the lifespan of your shoes.
  • CLEANING
Scratches and scuffs are inevitable, but these marks can easily be minimized. For military boots made of full-grain leather, take a paper towel or a small cloth soaked in a moisturizing solution (a moisturizing soap will do), and gently clean the affected areas in a circular motion. To remove dry dirt or embedded dust, use a brush designed for this purpose. If you want to remove embedded stains on soft leather such as nubuck or suede, use a shoe eraser and then a special nubuck brush. Sticky or greasy substances may seem impossible to remove, but there is actually a little trick to easily remove these stains. Place the boot in your freezer, wait a few hours for the shoe to freeze, then remove the substance with a small file, and you're done!
  • STORAGE
Properly storing your military shoes is just as important as their maintenance. Place your boots in a location that is neither too dry nor too humid; a slightly humid place is even preferable, as your boots will retain some moisture and thus avoid cracking. Small tips for properly maintaining your shoes:
  • Waterproof your boots if water does not run off the leather surface when it rains.
  • Regularly apply a nourishing substance to the leather to prevent cracking (boot grease).
  • To remove road salt, apply a vinegar solution.
  • Wipe off dust and dirt after each use.
  • Never dry your leather boots with a hairdryer or radiator.
  • Remove the insoles and laces to dry the shoes.
  • Always try your shoes before taking them to the field.
  • Store your intervention shoes in a slightly humid environment to avoid cracking.
